Zini, me & life in general

some more TV musings..

So what do I blog about today?! It was a busy day once again, with Zini’s vacation extended and all… I hardly thought about post. Well no, I did think or rather worry about posting without any productive result. I am sure I had a post in mind at some point in the day. But with my peanut sized memory I’ve actually lost it!! Can you believe it? I had a post READY in my mind and now I can’t remember a thing about it!!

But thankfully in past I had noted down some topics I want to blog about in my drafts!! I am not totally hopeless, you see πŸ˜‰

So today you will be treated to my thoughts on some recent TV commercials. You may refer to my post on TV and ask that how do I know about the recent TV commercial with not cable connection at home. Well it’s a valid question. But I have news for you.Β Now my MIL is with us so is cable connection. Now that the mystery of cable connection is solved, let’s get back to business, of reviewing TV commercials!!

First one is the Bournvita ad. Actually there are two of them. One where the mother wakes up her son for a early morning running race. Somehow it reminds me of the movie Udaan, where the abusive father makes his son race with him every morning. And the recent one is where a mom advises her daughter to practice with better people so that she is always one step ahead in the race of life!! And both the moms makes their children do this for “Taiyari jeet Ki”. On the face of it, there is nothing wrong with both the ads. But somehow, they seem to imply that the life is a race where they have to win, where loosing is not an option!! And i don’t like that option.

And there is another ICICI commercial with Amitabh Bachhan. Though I don’t find it as offensive as the Bournvita ones, I don’t like it much. I feel bad for the poor bank guy who has to go to open account on Uttarayan day. You may say it’s just an ad and that guy is actually an actor. Right!! But then there must be some bank employees who have to visit people on festival day to open their account!! Reminds me of days when I had to report on duty on holidays, especially Uttarayan!! Totally hated it.. One more thing with this ad is that I can’t see any woman on the terrace, leave alone flying kite!! Why?! It’s not exactly real!! We do see a lot of women on terrace and a lot of them flies kites too!!

And yes, those fairness cream and other similar advertisements are the worst. Plz go read RM’s post on it if you have not already done that.

Ok, I’ll stop my review of commercials now.. You can go back and watch TV πŸ˜‰

  1. Why do we put so much effort into *winning* – where is the enjoyment! There is no right or wrong really, it is really what you as a parent think is good for your child! Tiger moms like I call them – are the ones they showcase in the Bournvita ads and they do exist. I see one daily, practicing tennis with her 4-yr old boy (every single day) – he has his 1 hr classes and then practices with Mom for another hour or two. And that boy at that age is amazing…he is really good, you have to see to believe. so is that mother really pushing him (doesn’t really look that way) or is she giving him the opportunity to better himself in a sport he is actually too good at?

  2. It has been eons I watched ads on TV.. will watch these videos from home..

  3. I missed our ads here, in past we had such a brillent ads on tv. About uttrayan, missing it since last 16 yrs so its very painful.

  4. I am completely against all reality shows that have kids competing… I hate competitions a tad too much even in school. They all inculcate the importance of winning in a child… never the importance of enjoying what you are doing… I think its a very important thing that needs to be inculcated!

Pata nahi… life mein mazzaa karne se bhi zyada important is life mein aage badhna… for a lot of us Indians! Its our mental conditioning I tell you.

Bout working on festivals… I have never done that though I have worked in banks and insurance… I was a total rebel and would ask my boss to send me a mail in writing to tell me tomorrow I had to work although HR had declared it a holiday! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

I was a tough employee to be a boss too! πŸ˜›

    • ” life mein mazzaa karne se bhi zyada important is life mein aage badhna… for a lot of us Indians! ” You just nailed it..
I worked in an electricity company and it’s very important to maintain power supply on festival days, hence everybody had to work on festival days…Yes, we used to get mails with proper shift planning 😦

  5. I’ve seen only the Bournvita one, and I thought it was a good one, where a mother is encouraging her son, leading by example and getting her bit of running done too. Maybe, I was all caught up with the running bit, missed other messages there!

    • I am not saying that everything about the ad is bad. Yeah that leading by example and getting her own exercise is good part of it. But somehow the ad kept reminding me the scene from the movie Udaan. And that taiyari jeet ki thing is bit of turn off…

  6. Hmmm, interesting observations!
I just popped into say that I love the Bournvita ad where the mom and son run! For me, it is an amazing bonding they share which is shown , and honestly, I have been wanting to start running with Zo ever since πŸ˜€
Weird no, how different people look at things differently?

    • Yeah, different people do look at things differently πŸ™‚
You are right that running would help bonding between mom and child. And I would have loved if the focus of the ad would have been on bonding rather than winning.
I feel initially the kid is upset with her mom. And when he looses, his mom seems disappointed with him. He only get approving smile from his mom when he wins.

  7. It shows I hardly watch TV. I am not aware of any of the ads you have mentioned here πŸ™‚

  8. i’m completely with you on those TV ads… but then, they are ads πŸ˜€ they’re supposed to do that… haan but some things are not right and shouldn’t be picked up by parents and kids. πŸ™‚ i’d been very busy since the new year began as my in-laws were here. back to some free time now. πŸ˜€

    • You are right, they are ads and probably I am over reacting (and that’s not for the first time I am over reacting πŸ™‚ )
Good to have you back πŸ™‚

  9. Haven’t seen ads for a long long time now.
Ads leave a strong impression on kid’s mind. I remember Cheebu asking me to get some soap as it will make her nice and beautiful, and I explained to her that in ads people are paid money to act and say whatever is required and is not always true. She understands now πŸ™‚
